You’ll need: Black leggings or tights, a leotard or t-shirt (black if possible), 2 large sheets of strong card, some foil, glue, a hole punch and some ribbon. However, amongst all the excitement you've probably got the stress of making their Nativity play costume yourself. You may already have a fairy or angel costume at home, or at least a tutu, some fairy wings or a halo or tiara in your dressing-up box. For this, cut out a star shape and paint it with glitter paint, then fasten it onto a stick (like a garden cane cut short). In each interactive tutorial, our digital teacher explains the method, shows you examples and then gives you a chance to practise what you've learned.
All you need is a long rectangle of fabric to fashion into a tunic, or you can even cheat and adapt an old pillowcase for little ones! One of the highlights of your year will probably be watching your kids star in their school Nativity play. Check with the school to find out what gift they’re bringing, and whether you need to provide this as well. While my ideal self is icing cupcakes for the school fair ‘til dawn and sewing quilts for the kids during downtime, quite frankly this recent obsession with all things craft just isn’t me. Make a basic white or lighter blue headdress using another piece of material, and secure it to your child's head with a length of white elastic or a headband. That said, as a teacher – and now as a parent – I’ve had to take some deep breaths and get stuck in, especially around the time of year when Nativity plays are being organised. And they'll need a present to carry for the baby Jesus; you can make this from an old cardboard box, covered in gold or shiny wrapping paper, too.
