About this deal

In 2009 Llewelyn-Bowen released two ranges of papercrafting products in conjunction with Trimcraft, called Retro Rose and Venaissence. [26] I cannot believe how many of those rooms I got away with,” says Llewelyn-Bowen. When he knew a room wasn’t going to work out – when it “curdled”, as he puts it – he would do one of two things: pretend it had turned out fine, or else adorn the room with one of his own 18th-century-style paintings, so the owners would at least know they had something to sell.

The 'Aubrey' suite, inspired by Edwardian illustrator and aesthete Aubrey Beardsley, featuring bespoke tapestries using LLB original landscape drawings (Image: Steve Thorp)It really does feel as if I should’ve been a living David Copperfield, but actually that wasn’t the truth at all,” says Llewelyn-Bowen. He recalls feeling guilt for not feeling sadder about his father’s death. His love of pattern and design accumulated during a Fine Art degree at Camberwell School of Arts (now a constituent college of the University of Arts London). This degree left LLB with a steady hand but a bigger ego... He took his new-found knowledge with him to a variety of design companies and TV shows before establishing Llewelyn-Bowen Design in 1998. Since then, pattern has remained the key component to every product, project and performance in LLB's portfolio.

Changing Rooms' flamboyant lead designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has spent his entire career encouraging people to reject decorative modesty. His new book, More More More, encourages people to embrace individuality and curate a home them can truly love spending time in. He chats to Jenny Lee about Marie Kondo, Simon Cowell and how a maximalist home can save you money Lifestyle Changing Rooms' Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says everyone should showcase their tat rather than hiding it away LLB: Without a doubt the trend for trying to turn your house into a show home. It's when people try to turn it into somewhere that you could sell very easily. That really gives you so little permanence. I think it really undermines you and the people that live in your space. It's almost like you're temporary inhabitants – people must put down roots, or else homes just become empty shells. While colour can add a sense of warmth to homes, filling our rooms with cosy belongings can even save you money on heating costs.

Congratulations!!! So happy for you all," posted one, while a second added: " Congratulations Granddaddy LLB!"During our chat, he waxed lyrical about Japanese organising consultant and TV presenter Marie Kondo. On its own, grey is a disaster. On its own and accented with more grey, it's a disaster of national proportions," he insists. It might sound a bit extreme, but arson is a good starting point,” he says. “I’m assuming this is a perfect reflection of you, Chris?” Spend a wet Welsh weekend chatting to your tat says TV's design master, also fondly known as LLB, and your home will thank you for it. In a world where waves of grey and neutrals are submerging the creativity of interiors throughout homes in Wales the décor guru is flying the flag for flooding homes instead with jewel and gem colours, sumptuous fabrics, and beautifully-designed patterns – fully diving into the maximalist style. My homage to William Morris’ daughter, who took over the business after he died. She has incredibly strong Cotswold roots. She, I feel, took Arts and Crafts into a very 20th-century direction; she turned the colour palette up and made the designs that little bit more ‘bombastic’. I wanted to create a space that had all of the enjoyment and energy that the Morris dynasty derived from nature.’

Llewelyn-Bowen is also a patron of the children's charity MERU, co-founded by his father Trefor Llewelyn-Bowen with Bill Bond in 1970. Since 2017 he has appeared on the Australian TV series House Rules in seasons 5-8 as one of three judges, co-starring with Home Beautiful editor in chief Wendy Moore, and award-winning Australian architect Drew Heath. In 2020, Moore and Heath were replaced by interior designer Kyly Clarke and builder Saul Myers. They live as vampires,’ he says, ‘with film on the windows to not let the sunlight in; they’ve given up half their room to a fish tank which they then get into with the fish; they paint everything in their world only pink or yellow. There are 16 of them so far, and these people are absolutely extraordinary because the one thing they have in common is that they’re all happy. This is what’s really good about Britain; we’ve always really liked people who are a bit different.
