A Black Christmas gift guide: Part 2 - Gifts for Her
December 9, 2018
This week it's all about the ladies and we've got a great range of gift ideas lined up.
It's wet, cold and dark outside at this time of year meaning that it's all about cosy nights in and what better way to unwind and relax than with a beautifully scented candle? Kicking things off we have Tribal Unicorn and their eye-catching, unique collection of candles which look as good as they smell! Created by Angelica Louise 'GeGe,' these candles stand out with their bold colours and glitter.
Since it is Christmas we recommend the XMAS SPICE candle (above), which is a blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and glazed orange and comes in classic red and gold - bound to get the festive feels going.
Each candle is handmade with soy wax, which is not only cleaner burning (no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants) but also burns for longer. Environmentally sound as well, using biodegradable glitter, there is literally no reason not to love these candles!
The festive period isn't warm nights in of course, it's just as much about catching up with loved ones and celebrating. What better way to get in to the party spirit and feel and look good than with an exciting new lip colour? Enter MDMflow, the make-up brand founded by cosmetic scientist Florence Adepoju that 'sits in the post 90s era, with a heavy influence of the mid 90s-00s glamour that comes from the hip hop culture.'
Our recommendation is Vamp - a darker shade that can go with loads of looks and give an extra edge to any outfit. With lots of fun, daring shades and packaged in sleek gold - these lipsticks are a hint of glamour. Roll on the New Year parties!
Next up we move to clothing - but not the same old cute sparkly dress you might be expecting so see on a Christmas list.
Urban street-wear brand Kiwi&Yam has the aim of embodying multicultural Britain and youth rebellion at the heart of their designs, drawing on the 90's and early 2000 UK Grime scene, as well as West Africa, for inspiration.
Hands down our fave item from this innovative brand is this - quite simply fabulous - NOLLYWOOD HOMAGE TEE.
Paying homage to the film industry that is the second biggest in the world and loved by so many, featuring Nollywood stars Genevieve Nnaji, Ini Edo, Patience Ozokwor, Chinedu Ikedieze, Osita Iheme, Nkem Owoh and John Okafor, for this particular design Kiwi&Yam teamed up with Nigerian based creative hub, Alte Studio. This really is for the culture.
We move now to a brand that has really established itself of the past few years, filling a major gap in the market by redefining nude to include darker skin tones - yes, it's Nubian Skin. Creator Ade Hassan, MBE established Nubian Skin after being frustrated by the lack of options available for black women when it comes to buying nude hosiery and underwear. Starting in London but since having successfully expanded across the world, Nubian Skin provides quality essential underwear for women of colour.
Whether it's a nude strapless bra, everyday T-shirt bra or a pair of skin-coloured shoes (flats and heels both available) - this will be the gift that really does keep giving as the items are all wardrobe staples.
We promised variety and so next we move to skincare, courtesy of award winning afro beauty and wellness brand The Afro Hair & Skin Co. 'Dedicated to creating truly organic and natural products carefully crafted by hand, using fresh natural, and locally sourced ingredients that will feed your skin and hair with all the goodness necessary to blossom and be truly healthy,' this brand is all about promoting self-care and wellness.
Using the finest quality sustainable ingredients, as the name suggests The Afro Hair & Skin Co. specialises in 'providing high quality green beauty options to meet the unique needs of afro textured hair in all its forms as well as skincare that addresses some of the concerns that come with having melanin rich skin'.
Our top pick is their FLOW - Perfectly Balanced Facial Oil, 50ml. A product designed for everyday use, this little bottle goes a long way and should last up to 4 months as only a couple of drops need to be applied at a time. A carefully crafted combination of natural ingredients including blackcurrant seed oil and organic Ylang Ylang Flower form this facial oil which designed to leave skin healthy and radiant.
You're probably familiar with Leomie Anderson, the stunning London model who has worked with many of the biggest fashion names and has walking the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on her CV, but did you know she is also a talented designer and the creator of socially conscious female clothing brand, LAPP?
Leomie founded LAPP in 2016, with the aim of 'empowering women and promoting confidence, positivity and unity through fashion.' Many of the garments are explicitly political and speaking for women's rights - such as the THIS P***Y GRABS BACK range and TRUMP DUMP t-shirt (which quickly sold out).
Beyond giving us great looks and fashion with a conscience, LAPP also serves as a platform for girls and young women everywhere to connect and share experiences and thoughts on women’s issues with its blog series.
Sticking with the concept of a brand which combines style and social justice, we come to our final choice in this week's guide, Vitae London.
This London-based watch brand consists of designs that are sophisticated, classy and timeless (no pun intended). Christmas is all about giving to others - and not just presents but also love, time etc. - and spreading some joy. Buying any one of Vitae London's delightful, classic pieces will mean you are helping to transform the life of a child in South Africa since some of the profit from each watch purchased from their classic range of watches goes towards ground-level charities in South Africa that are working to encourage the development and education of youth and children. The money from each watch sale supplies a child with two sets of a school uniform, a bag and footwear to see them through the year.
The Rose Gold - 40mm - Walmer (named after a township on Port Elizabeth, South Africa that the brand supports) has to be our favourite.
So there you have it, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to finding the perfect gift for a special woman this Christmas - the only tough part will be choosing between them!
