A Black Christmas gift guide: Part 1 - Cards & gift wrap
December 2, 2018
December is upon us once again and Christmas is around the corner but don't panic if you haven't started your Christmas shopping yet, we're here to help. We're dreaming of a Black Christmas this year and as such have devised a list of amazing Black British brands that have beautiful products for you to give (and hopefully receive as well) whoever you are shopping for. This week, we're kicking off with greetings cards and wrapping paper.
First up we have Kitsch Noir. Having come into existence just last year, it's remarkable how far this fun and quirky brand has come in such a short space of time - already stocked in Paperchase. Created in summer of 2017 by fashion accessories designer Cherelle Brown in response to the lack of diversity she saw within greeting cards, Brown set out to put this right. Kitsch Noir 'supports a movement that celebrates the love and enjoyment of the black British experience. All cards and small gifts are designed to spread positivity, humour and sometimes a little education, with diversity at the heart of the brand's vision.'
Our favourites from the brand include this Dutty Mulled Wine design and also their Black Santa gift wrap. To see the full range of designs head over to www.kitschnoir.com
Next up we have Nicola Lespeare. Started in 2016 by digital illustrator Nicola, her eponymous brand, was created with the purpose of making ‘art and life style products that elevate black women flourishing with fro-fabulous hair.’
It all began when Nicola began looking for a birthday card for her sister, hoping to find one featuring a black woman with an afro, but found nothing. This prompted her sketch her own design. Nicola recalls, ‘My sister loved her card and was so happy to receive a birthday card that reflected aspects of her physical characteristics, such as her skin tone and hair texture. Seeing her expression and how she resonated with her celebration card in that moment, made me want to recreate the same happy experience for others.’ The rest, as they say, is history.
Staying true to the brand's roots, most of the Christmas range is focused on black Queens and the cards are perfect for a special mother, friend, sister, wife etc. Shop here: www.nicolalespeare.com
Now we come to London based creative illustration company Kazvare Made It has a wide range of modern, colourful and playful cards, many of which reference popular culture - such as this Drippin' So Saucy card which is also available in a Came Through Drippin' version for any Cardi B fans. They also have some pretty jazzy wrapping paper.
Up next, Croydon-based graphic designer Leanne Armstrong brings us the Leanne Creative range of Christmas cards that has something for whoever it is you're buying for. The collection is available on Etsy.
Last but by no means least, is Special Touch Designs. Established by Georgina Fihosy, this Afrocentric brand was created in 2015 when Georgina wanted to find a card for a friend who had just had a baby and couldn’t find one with a black baby or one that reflected her and her family. Each card is made individually at Georgina's home studio in Kent and the cards are finished with beautiful African wax print material. Visit www.specialtouchdesigns.com for the full range.
So there you have it - if you're looking for a unique card (or gift wrap) to give to loved ones this Christmas then look no further than these five quality Black British brands. With so many great designs to choose from, there really is something for everyone. Don't spend too long deciding though as you only have a few weeks to get your orders in and cards sent off.
