Former Coronation St. actor Ken Morley remains on CBB despite making racist remarks

Former Coronation Street actor Ken Morley has received an official warning from

'Celebrity Big Brother' producers over his offensive comments

There is public outrage after former Coronation Street actor Ken Morley made a series of sexist and racist comments on the Saturday night episode of Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother.

Morley, 71, used the term “negro” to refer to his fellow housemate, African-American R&B singer Alexander O’Neal. The former Coronation St. actor put on a Southern US accent as he made a wholly offensive joke about “a nice big fat negro."

Alexander, 61, remained gracious in his response to Morley’s shocking remarks, telling him bluntly: “If you're ever in the company of a black man, say black."

Mr O’Neal’s wife, Cynthia, is furious with the British actor’s comments and wants him off the show immediately. She said, "I can't believe the choice of words. […] It's disgusting, it's despicable, it's something that should never come out of anyone's mouth anymore."

Morley later tried to defend his racist remarks by saying that ‘Negro’ is the term for black in Spanish and that he did not want to say ‘black’ as it seemed rude. But as Alexander rightly pointed out to him, “you're not Spanish. In case you didn't know. Don't use n***o, just use black."

The soul singer’s wife was not falling for it either. "This man is not stupid, this man is ignorant. Those words would not come out of someone's mouth unless they were racist," said Mrs O’Neal.

She also warned of the possible reaction to the 71-year-old remaining on the show in light of his offensive comments, saying that if he stays and her husband leaves “there will be an explosion in London over racism."

Nor was it only racist comments made by Ken, who complained of 'boring political correctness,' that have offended his fellow housemates and members of the public.

The 71-year-old also made an inappropriate joke about following some of his female housemates into the bathroom and boasted that the house was “the best place to look at arses in the world".

Ken was called to the Diary Room over his “wholly unacceptable" language and told by Big Brother that if he didn’t change his behaviour then they "may have no choice but to remove him from the house."

For many, a warning that Morley “may” be removed if his behaviour does not improve is a wholly inadequate response which trivialises the seriousness of the offence and they want him, instead, to be removed from the show immediately.
