Will Lewis Hamilton be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014?

F1 racer Lewis Hamilton has had a highly successful year

Last month the panellists were announced for the BBC 2014 Sports Personality of the Year Award. Former Olympian Denise Lewis and former footballer Jason Roberts will appear alongside Rebecca Adlington, Tanni Grey-Thompson and eight others to decide the top ten nominees for the main award.

This year’s prestigious event will be held in Glasgow at The SSE Hydro on Sunday, 14 December. It is estimated that a 12,000 strong crowd will be present to see who is crowned this year’s sports personality.

Ultimately it is the public who choose the overall winner, who is decided by public votes on the night of the show.

Whilst the nominees are yet to be announced Lewis Hamilton, 29, is a strong contender for the award following an extremely successful year of racing.

Last year Andy Murray won the award. Recent previous winners include cyclists Bradley Wiggins (2012) and Mark Cavendish (2011).

In the past decade not one of the winners has been a Formula One sportsperson so if Hamilton did win it would be an exciting moment for the sport as a whole.

This year’s show will be broadcast live on BBC One on Sunday 14 December.
