Rookie policeman Dewayne Hamilton had only been with the Met for a week and was still on probation when he dangled himself over a dual-carriage way to save a schoolgirl’s life on Monday.
The incident took place over the busy A40 road in Hillingdon, West London, at approximately 11am. It was a passer-by who initially saved the girl by grabbing her arm through a safety rail and holding onto her until Pc Hamilton arrived.
Pc Hamilton climbed over the railings and put his arm around the teenager to stop her from falling to her death.
Both the officer and the girl remained dangerously placed above the dual-carriage way for several minutes until the London Fire Brigade and ambulance services arrived and harnessed first the girl and then the officer to safety.
The girl was taken to hospital for treatment but a spokesman said that, “She did not suffer any serious physical injury during the rescue. Both she and her family are receiving support." Hillingdon police Inspector Lindsey Hannigan said, “This was an incredibly courageous act. What makes this even more impressive is that this officer only arrived at Hillingdon one week ago as a probationer constable.” She continued, “His action, which placed his own life in danger, was an extraordinary act of bravery.”
Pc Hamilton said, “I am just so glad I was there and able to make a difference. I have a child about this girl’s age and all I could think about was saving her. I am so very happy that we were all able to rescue her from danger.”
