Mixed-race singer FKA Twigs has suffered racist abuse on Twitter since dating Robert Pattinson
September 30, 2014
Singer FKA Twigs has spoken out about receiving a flood of racist messages on Twitter since it being rumoured last week that she and British actor Robert Pattinson are dating.
The highly talented singer, who is nominated for three MOBO Awards and the 2014 Mercury Prize, has been subjected to racist abuse from online trolls. In a number of tweets the singer was called a monkey including one which read “you’re beautiful, a beautiful monkey HAHAHAHAHAHA.” Another user wrote, “I can’t believe I have changed robert Goddess Kristen for this monkey.”
The singer – whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett – has a Jamaican father and mother of both Spanish and English descent. "I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week," the singer responded via Twitter, adding that, "Racism is unacceptable in the real world and it's unacceptable online."
Barnett recently spoke about the racism she suffered as a child, attending a school where she was the only mixed-race student. In an interview with Dazed and Confused she said, “Obviously it was hard […] People said horrible things about something I had no control of, which was tough. But that’s okay. Life isn’t supposed to be easy, is it? I never really saw anything wrong with how I looked, it was more that certain people pointed things out to you about yourself.”
It remains to be officially confirmed whether Barnett and Pattinson are dating.
