Description

this captivating novel's finest component is its endearing heroine who, at her journey's end, has learned to follow her dreams but know her limits.

Auður Ava's novels have been translated into over 25 languages, and they include Butterflies in November and Hotel Silence , also published by Pushkin Press. Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir's Miss Iceland Is at once a poetic, light-hearted narrative and a sharply edged social critique that is caustic and righteous in its portrayal of the enduring nature of sexism, misogyny and homophobia.

This novel referenced specific roads and routes through downtown Reykjavík, so I was able to travel there in my mind’s eye, though I’m sure my 2018 trip vistas were different than the city in the early 1960s! Enchanting is too soft a word but this tale had an hypnotic feel that through its nuanced and poetic language lifted this story to something more deeply felt than expected. But the world outside is changing, and Hekla knows she must escape to find freedom abroad, whatever must be left behind. BUT THIS BOOK is one of the most harrowing, powerful, and imaginative books novels I’ve read this year! She possesses an inner calm that is at odds with her volcanic namesake, but offers readers an inspirational example of a woman who knows what she wants – whether it’s a man in her life for a few months, or eight hours a day for writing – and pursues her desires with neither doubt nor apology.Reykjavik is both a gossipy town and a literary hotspot — everyone knows where Halldor Laxness lives and keeps an eye out for him. It is gentle but also humourous and quite punchy, and the subject is uncomfortable--sexism and homophobia. Her last novel, Hotel Silence , won the Nordic Council Literature Prize and the Icelandic Literary Prize.

When he finally makes it to Denmark he discovers that although there are clubs where men dance together, they are still raided by Danish police. John Jón, her gay best friend, welcomes her in Reykjavik and together they struggle to be valued for their artistic qualities rather than their gender or sexual orientation. Alongside Hekla’s and Jón John’s coming-of-age journeys, Ólafsdóttir includes a third key character – Ísey. Icelandic novelist and playwright Audur Ava Ólafsdóttir's atmospheric sixth novel, Miss Iceland, is just the ticket. I linked to my review of Butterflies in November in the introduction to this review, I really enjoyed that one, too.
