About this deal

Read as a neutral statement, that essentially encapsulates the flavor profile of Superstition, a mildly sweet Scotch with a touch of peat smoke and some notes of tropical and earthy spices – pleasant and mildly interesting but not extraordinary. The work was completed in 1963, and included the installation of taller stills, allowing the distillery to create a mix of malts.

The expressions will be replaced with five new bottlings – including a ‘refined and stylish’ bottle design – created around a new signature style, combining subtle smoke with sweetness from American white oak barrels and ‘enhanced’with a Sherry cask finish, described as a mix of Highland and Island styles. Extremely unget-at-able" was how George Orwell described the location of the Isle of Jura in 1946; the island remains difficult to reach today. Most travelers to Jura go by Caledonian MacBrayne car ferry from Kennacraig on the Kintyre Peninsula to Islay, and then cross to Jura from Port Askaig on Islay by the MV Eilean Dhiura, a small vehicle ferry which is run by ASP Ships on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council. Islay can also be reached by air: Islay Airport is served by daily flights from Glasgow. From March to October there is also a passenger ferry from Tayvallich on the west coast of Scotland. [9] Brand ambassadors [ edit ]In the US, the focus is on distributor E&J Gallo. “We need to build awareness of the story, and we need to build belief and confidence in the brand,” she says. “For the past two years we’ve brought 150 of our US colleagues to Jura in May and June.” At which point it’s job done, like the cynical buyer we met earlier, and the same goes for the 8,000 tourists who visit the distillery each year. “Once there you can’t help but take it to your heart,” says Beeston, who fell under its spell eight years ago while working for Bowmore.

Graham Logan, Jura distillery manager, said: ‘This marks a hugely significant step for Jura. A new house style of whisky is not for the faint hearted but it tells you where we are now and how committed we are to Jura, the community and our whiskies for the long term. The island of Jura is seven miles (11km) wide and thirty miles (48km) long and it has only one road, one pub, and one distillery. There are seven estates on Jura: Ardfin, Inver, Jura Forest, Ruantallain, Tarbert, Ardlussa, and Barnhill. Fewer than 200 people live on the island (while it has a red deer population of around 5000). The inhabitants of Jura are known as Diurachs, which is their Gaelic name.

The distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell in 1810. The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900, it was again in disuse and dismantled. In the 1950s two local estate owners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, keen to revive the local economy, had the distillery rebuilt and expanded by the architects Lothian, Barclay, Jarvis & Boys with input from whisky and distillery expert William Delmé-Evans. [1] [2] The Jura Travellers Collection (previously known as the Jura Sherry Cask Collection)is a range of four whiskies matured in ex-Bourbon casks and finished in Pedro Ximénez casks that will be also go on sale in April. Clow, Robert (14 June 2009). "Obituary: Geoffrey Jarvis". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077 . Retrieved 16 October 2019. Jura distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery on the island of Jura in the Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland.

Dictionary of Scottish Architects - DSA Building/Design Report (October 16, 2019, 2:29 pm)". scottisharchitects.org.uk . Retrieved 16 October 2019. Isle of Jura Superstition Single Malt Scotch Whisky is crafted from 13% peated barley (the barley is peated to 40 phenol ppm) and 87% unpeated barley. Once the whisky has been distilled, it is matured up to 21 years in American oak casks that were previously used to mature bourbon. The whisky has a subtle aroma of smoke, olives, marzipan and marinated beef. The whisky gives way to notes of cloves, cinnamon, nuts, heather and peat on the palate, and finishes with a warming touch of honey and cedar. Isle of Jura Superstition earned the Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Beverage Testing Institute Competition in 2012. Superstition is a unique whisky created from the marriage of bold, strong peated barley offering evocative smoke and heady malt that you’d expect from an older Jura and a selection stylishly warm and delicately aged malts contributing a sweet, creamy oaty goodness with hints of honey and spice on the tail. From April 2018 Jura’s core range of Origin, Superstition, Diurach’s Own 16 Year Old and Prophecy will be removed from sale. And don’t panic just now, it was just the nose that resembled a whiff of almond-like toilet cleaning stuff. We actually liked the overall whisky.Jura has been helped yet overshadowed by the great whisky boom on Islay next door, where there may be a dozen distilleries before long. But Jura is starting to forge its own path with a different style of whisky that’s more Highland in character. Those who taste it may one day visit to find an island the size of Inner London with barely enough people to fill a single street, and where the deer outnumber the locals by 35 to one. Drag the most hard‐bitten supermarket buyer to this remote corner of the Inner Hebrides and it’s job done for Beeston and her team. Once the buyer has given up on their futile quest for mobile reception or Wi‐Fi, they will succumb to this magical isle. In the capital, Craighouse, dubbed ‘downtown Jura’, you will find all you need, as she explains: “The pier is just a stone’s throw from the distillery. The pub and hotel are across the road, and the shop is two doors down.”

Combining two styles of whisky is a fairly unorthodox approach, but one that we know is right for Jura. The start of peating saw some smoky whisky being included in the no-age Superstition brand, launched in 2002, while a 100% smoked Prophecy was released in 2009.
